Diesel powertrains, despite the headlines on the news, are still a trendy option. In fact, Mazda is next on the totem pole as they are introducing a six-cylinder diesel engine under the hood of their 2023 Cx-60 crossovers. In 2023, the CX-60 will tout this torquey little Mazda diesel engine that will work alongside a 48-volt mild hybrid system to make it as efficient as possible. The oil burner is 3.3-liters across its six cylinders.

Mazda has designed this combination with a system coined “Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI). While working with the mild-hybrid system, the mill is good for 197 horsepower for rear-wheel models and 251 horsepower for all-wheel-drive models. While this turbocharged diesel engine doesn’t make a ton of horsepower, the 406 lb-ft of torque is enough to set you back in the seat.

The mid-size / crossover cars are already known for their great fuel mileage, so Mazda has their work cut out in terms of fuel economy. Surprisingly, though, the Cx-60 consumes just over 57 miles per gallon in the two-wheel-drive models. Splurge for more power? The 251 horsepower model trims that back to a measly 53 miles per gallon. At today’s fuel prices, imagine throwing the family in the car and heading down the road knowing fuel stops aren’t a worry. However, we’re unsure if the diesel-powered CX-60 is going to make its way stateside.

As for performance, per Mazda, the 251 horsepower CX-60 will achieve 62 m.p.h. in just 7.4-seconds. Mazda claims its oil-burning mill produces a smooth and quiet engine tone while also delivering a clean and engaging sound.
