When talking about diesel oil, one has to mention liquid-Moly. This German-based company has been making quality synthetic oils for decades. One of their latest offerings for diesel vehicles is Top Tech oil, which is factory approved for major car manufacturers such as VW, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes diesel engines. But oil is nothing new, so we asked Steffen Niemitz what is different about the new Top Tec oil.

They might look the same other than a couple of numbers, but we are going to teach you the differences between them.
Steffen states, “the viscosity of the oil is now a 0w-30. Previously, manufacturers would allow you to choose various viscosities based on the performance spec. But now, the manufacturers are forcing dealerships to use the lowest possible viscosity in the performance spec. The reason is fleet co2 emissions. The thinner an oil, the faster it lubricates after a cold start, which reduces wear and fuel consumption in reducing emissions.”
To break down the differences between the Top Tec 5w-30 and 5w-40. Let’s say you have two identical 2015 diesel BMW’s one with 15,00 miles and one with 200,000 miles. You should put the lower viscosity in the lower mileage car. While putting the thicker viscosity oil in the higher mileage car due to pre-existing wear while staying in the performance spec. That does not mean that the Top Tec 5w-40 is just for old engines. It was designed for new engines with approved specifications.
