Video: Diesel Brothers Episode 5 Recap

Another week, another Diesel Brothers episode. It’s Episode 5 in this installment, and following hot on the heels of the epic F-650 giveaway build from the past two episodes, Heavy D is determined to follow his magnum opus with yet another home run. But first, he needs to find his truck. He comes across it as his right-hand man, Diesel Dave, purchases a 1997 Dodge Ram crew cab with a flatbed. With 230,000 miles on the clock, the truck has seen its fair share of road, but it’s ready to see even more once it gets in the hands of the Diesel Sellerz crew.

The Holy Grail: a crew cab Dodge Rum with a 12-valve Cummins motor.

Heavy D goes on to tell us that in his eyes, this is the Holy Grail of diesel trucks, owing to its four-door layout and 12-valve Cummins motor. “It’s one of the most sought-after diesel trucks on the market,” he says. The 12-valve is appealing thanks to its low-tech mechanical design, without any “fancy computers getting in the way of pure power. This makes it super-simple to work on, strong enough to haul heavy loads, and it lasts forever – some up to half a million miles.”

Almost immediately, Heavy D has his vision solidified: He will take a six-speed manual transmission and swap it in, the frame will be stretched to make it into a longbed, the interior will get an overhaul, the wheels and tires will go bigger, the body will be lifted, and a twin-turbo system will round out the badass-ness.

The Holy Grail will go over the top when all is said and done.

The stress levels ramp up as Heavy D gets a call letting him know that Federal Tires, a Taiwan-based tire company, is on its way over to learn more about the business and meet face-to-face. Heavy D explains that he has always wanted to have a custom tire made for the diesel market, and to have a hand in its production and sales. After the expected pleasantries and whatnot, Diesel Dave takes the Feds out for a romp in the dirt to show what diesel is all about – getting the job done and having fun doing it. Everyone meets back at Sparks Motors, shakes hands, and Heavy D now has to play the waiting game to see if he gave Federal Tires the right impression.

Back at the shop, the truck is mid-breakdown as the team discovers the frame has been patched and welded six ways to Sunday. After finding a section of frame in good condition, the frame is restored and the build proceeds. Casey, a friend of Heavy D, shows up and presents the crew with an F-350 and $15,000 to play with. Casey wants the truck revamped to be both a mobile workshop and a rolling billboard for his company, and Heavy D is all too happy to give it to him.

The Holy Grail Dodge Ram hits a wall after Heavy D finds rust rotting out the rocker panel on the driver side. The builds heads to body work, while the F-350 is reimagined to have a newer-generation front end installed for better looks, as well as feature the new prototype Patriot tires sent from Federal. Also, much of the tools needed for the truck are mocked up, including the crane, welder, and air compressor. The power takeoff is tested on the crane and is found to be working, so the truck is sent to paint for final touches, and the result is stunning.

The episode ends on that note, leaving us hanging until Episode 6 to see what happens with the Holy Grail. What were your thoughts on the finished F-350? Let us know in the comments below..
