Every now and again, we need to shake things up a bit and show you guys something a little off the beaten path. This time, we go well off that path and bring you this wild-looking Cummins-swapped Mustang owned by Westen Champlin. If you haven’t heard of Westen Champlin, check out the last story we did, where he took a then-late-model Ford Mustang and outfitted it with a 300,000-mile 12-valve Cummins engine. Champlin had to upgrade the front suspension to include airbags so the front of the car could support the weight of the engine. After all, he added at least 1,000 pounds to the nose with the engine swap.
It has been a while since the swap was completed, and he created plenty of content and turned a ton of heads with this car. However, like all of us, he eventually get used to the power of the Cummins and wanted more. to get more, Champlin turned to one of our industry’s experts in the world of 12-valve engines, Power Driven Diesel in Utah. He trusted Todd Welch and his guys to turn this not-so-ordinary Mustang into a fire-breathing 1,500-horsepower machine with the inclusion of their 6.1-liter custom Cummins engine.
Featuring a Stage-2 cylinder head, oversized lines, and a huge set of compound turbos, the Cummins-swapped “Smoke Stang” will never be the same. In his latest video, he showcases the swap being done at Power Driven along with some parking lot shenanigans that are truly entertaining to watch. You can see the tire-melting event right here. After making a few pulls on the dyno and a few small adjustments, the Smoke Stang pumped out 1,264 horsepower and 2,200 lb-ft of torque. For a car that was never supposed to see a diesel engine or that kind of power with one, that is outstanding.
For those that aren’t familiar with Power Driven Diesel, you may remember hearing about them from the Ultimate Callout Challenge a few years ago. They were behind the explosion heard around the world when their competition vehicle scattered its guts all over the dyno, tragically destroying the truck in the process.
