It is amazing to think that the SEMA Show was two weeks ago already. If you aren’t familiar with the SEMA Show, it is the largest automotive aftermarket show in the US on one of the largest in the world. It is really the only time of year, when you can bring your 100 percent custom ride and the vast majority of people at the show, won’t even see it because the vehicle right next to you, is just as cool and customized.
Power Automedia (the publisher of Diesel Army) has been attending and covering the SEMA Show since its inception in the early 2000’s and many of our staff members have been attending the event for close to 20 years.
Over that time, we have all seen many trends come and go. One thing that is very concerning for us as Diesel Army, was the lack of diesel stuff. It is extremely apparent that companies are diversifying and going into other markets instead of continuing to focus on diesel performance parts. This can be heavily attributed to the emissions changes over the past few years and the heavy fines that the government has slapped on companies who manufacture emission defeating devices.
With it becoming harder and more expensive to add a ton of power to the newer trucks, people are looking to spend their money elsewhere. So, manufacturers are having to diversify to keep themselves not only afloat but growing.
With this decrease in diesel consumers, less companies are interested in handing out free products or working with project vehicle builders. So, the builders have had to change what types of vehicle they are building and change their focus as well.
While there were a ton of trucks at the show, it is still nowhere near what it was say, five years ago. What was, also, interesting to witness over the last couple of years is the increased number of three quarter and one ton trucks that were gas powered.
So, we searched the halls looking for some of the coolest diesel trucks at the show. Here is a list of just over 40 of them.
Ok, so these aren't full size trucks, but they are diesels that are setting recordes. The Mazda SkyActiv is a 2.2L 4 cylinder making 450 horsepower and taking home victory after victory. The S10 is a very cool project built by college students. It actually holds the title of Worlds Fastest Vegetable Oil-Powered Truck.
