In last years 2017 Ultimate Callout Challenge, the field was packed with the heaviest hitters in the diesel performance industry. In that field of big dogs was Donovan Harris, in his Armor Inc. and Dynomite Diesel Products entry. His 6.4-liter Cummins-powered Ram vested him a fourth place overall finish which is nothing to hang your head about.
We caught up with Mr. Harris in regards to his performance last year. “I was very happy with last years performance,” said Harris. “It was a huge learning experience.” Although he was just short of getting on the podium of last years event, the Armor and Dynomite team have made the necessary changes to change the outcome for the better in 2018.
Starting their weekend last year was the drag race portion of the event. Out of the three attempts at the 1320-feet, their best elapsed time in the quarter-mile was 9.520 seconds. That pass was good enough to put Harris in the third place spot in the drag racing competition. Personally, I think the truck has more in it as far as elapsed time, but it’s not an easy task getting all of that horsepower to the ground.
Hoping to better the drag racing performance, Harris has added multiple steering and suspension components to hopefully keep this beast planted. On top of the upgrades, they’ve also been working on cutting weight where necessary.
After a happy beginning to the weekend, Harris was headed to the dreaded dyno for his chance to set the bar high. Harris put down 1,625 horsepower and 2,182 lb-ft of torque. Although that’s an incredible amount of horsepower and torque, that was only good enough to place him 8th in the dyno competition. With the 2018 event only a few days away, Harris and his team of dedicated enthusiasts probably have something up their sleeve to better that performance.
Although he was short on the dyno competition, Harris had a chance to surpass everyone with a dominant performance on the sled pulling challenge. With the second place finish in the sled pulls, Harris’s 312.11-foot pull was not quite enough to snag that first place finish for the day. With that being said, if Harris can find a way to squeeze more power out of the Dynomite Diesel-powered engine, that may set him up for a spot on the top of that podium.
“Any event is anyone’s event,” said Harris. “It’s anyone’s to win because anything can happen.” What Harris said is true. It doesn’t matter who makes the most power, goes the farthest with the sled, or makes the fastest pass. It takes consistency in every event. It comes down to who is the most consistent and can score high enough to take the bragging rights home.
“After last year’s event, we’ve been to a few more dyno events,” said Harris. “I’ve learned a lot from these events and I’m becoming more comfortable with where the truck needs to be set and what I need to do.” We’re confident that the Amror Inc. crew will have this thing figured out come May.
