A few weeks ago, we put out a feeler in search of the fastest diesel-powered vehicle in each state. No stipulations, no restrictions, just the fastest car or truck in each state ever. As long as there is proof, we will accept your submission. First on our list comes as far west as possible; California. After looking through our submissions, it was Kenny Bruner. Bruner’s 2006 Dodge Ram is extremely modified and barrels down both the race track and the sled track quite often.
For elapsed time records, we turned to the eighth-mile. Yes, it is a much shorter distance than some of you would rather judge, but the fact of the matter is, there is more eighth-mile racing these days with these heavy trucks. Bruner’s 2006 RAM has been 6.30 seconds at 112-MPH in the 660-feet and has sled pulled quite a bit. As you can see, on the inside of this RAM, it’s strictly business.
What’s Inside?
Like we’ve discussed before, to have a truck that is competitive, especially at this power level, you need a good support system or a group of people you trust to wrench and fabricate the necessary parts. For Bruner, he relies on his business, Capital Diesel Performance, in Windsor, California for all tuning and upgrades including the built engine, roll cage, chassis work, transmission, and tuning.
To make any truck work perfect, you have to have the right ingredients. A little too much of one thing can cause things to not be perfect. On the air side of things, Bruner trusts a pair of
Borg-Warner turbochargers. These turbos aren’t your ordinary sizes either. On the atmospheric side, Bruner has an S591/111/1.15 feeding a smaller, yet large, SXE S475/87/1.0. These turbos work in unison with a
TurboSmart 45-MM wastegate and
Banks Power side draft intake and intercooler.
Under the hood, there isn't much left. Just a few parts needed to safely go down the track.
Continuing on how crucial your fuel and air mixture is, the fueling side of this engine is just as big as the air. Bruner uses a set of
Fleece Performance 10-MM Stroker CP3 High-Pressure pumps,
Dynomite Diesel Products 200-percent over stock fuel injectors,
Exergy Performance 2400 BAR pressure relief valve, and a 6.7-Liter Cummins fuel rail.
When that mixture is just right, the finished product is amazing. We’re talking raw horsepower and torque that with shoot this truck into the low six-second range and more. With this amount of power, the engine needs to be able to handle it. So, what engine handles this? Bruner went with a 6.7-Liter based
Hamilton Cams block and a factory 5.9-Liter crankshaft. When you morph these two together, you get a 6.5-Liter Cummins.
With the help of some extreme weight loss on the interior, Bruner's truck can go about as fast as he wants. With the encouragement of a certified roll cage, he can race knowing he's enclosed in nice protection.
On the inside, the factory crankshaft is the home of a set of
CP Carrillo connecting rods and a
Diamond Racing Pistons. Bruner also uses a 14-MM Gorilla Girdle from
Industrial Injection keeping the block stiff. Topside, this 6.5-Liter engine’s cylinder head is held down with a set of ARP L19 head studs and mates to the surface of the block using fire rings.
Now, you have the whole package. Your engine makes big-time power, big time torque, and the engine is tough as nails, but something is missing. Now, you have to apply this power to the ground. With the help of a CM849 ECM and a standalone transmission harness from
Grays Performance And Off-Road, he can control his transmissions every move.
On the inside of this 48RE transmission is plenty of parts that will handle the stress. A 2400-RPM stall
Diesel Performance Converters Triple-Disc torque converter, TCS input, intermediate, and output shafts,
Sonnax servos, Red Alto clutches, and an
HTS Transmissions valve body.
In a matter of I’m sure is a few hours, Bruner can have this truck ready to play on the dirt, too!
