I’ve followed Scott Birdsall for quite a while now and after this weekend’s action at Pikes Peak, I couldn’t not share the word on his latest accomplishment. Birdsall and “Ol Smokey F1” now hold the title of the fastest diesel-powered machine to face the mountain. Being able to say that has to feel incredible and I’m sure his whole team is proud to be on board.

“WE DID IT! The FASTEST DIESEL EVER! In limp mode from the heat since Devil’s Playground and it still happened,” said Birdsall. “The past few weeks have been the most challenging of my motorsport career. My crew, my friends, and my team partners dug deep, and we ground through all the BS to achieve something I have been chasing for 3 years. Thank you to my wife for supporting my crazy endeavors and for cheering this wildman on holding down the homestead while the state is on fire. I love you.”

The old diesel record was 11 minutes and 37 seconds. Ol Smokey managed to pull this off in 11:24:065 beating the record without using its full potential by a few seconds. “My first two-thirds of the race was very fast until the truck started to overheat and went into limp mode near the start of Devils Playground,” said Birdsall. “Fortunately, the speed below pushed me over the top, and the previous record of 11:37 held by factory Mercedes Benz fell. My Toyo Proxes Slicks were awesome, and they had amazing adhesion giving me the supreme confidence to push hard!”

Birdsall’s ’49 Ford is powered by a 1,200-horsepower Cummins engine and with the help of all of his sponsors on board, he was able to achieve something he has chased for over three years.
