As the event approached closer and closer, Texas natives and diesel enthusiasts abroad began to prepare. Ever since last year, Ross Dunagan and his team at Flyin Diesel Performance have been talking this event up and it didn’t disappoint. On the Kerrville Airport runway, trucks and cars invaded to drag race all day for over $8,000 in prizes.
Airport Race Wars featured multiple classes including Small Tire, Big Tire, Hot Street, and Work Stock. As the day went on, two went down and only one came back until a few winners were crowned. Out of the four classes, there were only three winners. How does that work? Larry Brown, “the white flatbed Dodge guy” put it on them in both the Big Tire and Hot Street classes.
This action-packed day of family fun was full of super-fast drag cars and trucks. This was an opportunity to show the locals what these guys like to do on the weekends.
As for the Small Tire and Work Stock classes, the winners were David Burley and Sara. We don't have a last name for Sara, but congratulations on the victory.
After the event, we talked with Dunagan about it all and he’s excited about the future. “First off I’ve gotta thank my entire crew at Flyin Diesel Performance & Offroad. Without them, this event wouldn’t have happened. Next, the volunteers that stepped up and didn’t complain once and made everything run smooth. I owe it all to you all for doing that for us! Then, our sponsors. Thank you so much for coming out and supporting this event. We hope you all had just as much fun as we did! Last but not least, the Kerrville Airport. They were great to work with and we appreciate them and their facility.”
All shapes and sizes, the track stayed hot with race-ready vehicles!
When asking how the event went, Dunagan was excited to relay the metrics of the day and he said there were over 125 racers and 3,000 or more in attendance. For a first-time event, they had that many drivers with that many watching and had $10,000 to give out after the racing was over and that outright impressive.
“The day started with poor weather and I was terrified that it wasn’t going to let up. But, luckily for all of us, it let up just in time allowing for wall-to-wall, action-packed racing from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Thankfully, everything went smooth and we didn’t have a single accident or major delay. We had one small oil down, but that was it,” Dunagan said.
On and off the track, there were things to look at. Full-blown race truck, modified street trucks, and event show-worthy rigs.
“I have to brag a little now,” Dunagan said chuckling. “We just threw one of the best no prep events in Texas as first-timers. 125 racers, 3,000 spectators, and hardly a flaw. All of that in our small town of Kerrville. Don’t underestimate this town because we know how to throw down!”
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend this event due to prior obligations, but seeing how this event is going, we will definitely be making the trip next year.
