Kicking off 2022, our Truck of the Week goes to Tony Mazzocco. Tony’s truck was spotted on Instagram where he has earned a good-sized following, and rightfully so. Tony has taken a truck that is nearly fifty years old and turned it into a head-turning, road-worthy machine. The old, factory engine is gone and it has been replaced by a powerful p-pumped 24-valve, 5.9-liter Cummins engine.
I reached out to Tony to get the scoop on his build and he was excited to share it with us here at Diesel Army. “The truck is sitting on a factory F-100 chassis from 1972. I wanted to repower the truck and put stronger parts underneath it so I swapped the front differential out with a kingpin, Dana 60 axle,” Tony said. “On the rearend, I used a Dodge Dana 80, full-spool axle with Chromoly axles with disc brakes matched with a leaf spring system from a late 70s Ford.”
This took some pretty serious modifications to do, too. In fact, Tony had to cut all of the factory brackets off and grind some wedges out to make it all fit on the front. Leaving the factory coil springs on the front offers a better ride quality, too. Because of the output capabilities of this truck, Tony also relies on a set of traction bars to maintain the correct pinion angle.
Speaking of output, cranking out somewhere near 700-horsepower, Tony’s F-100 features a 24-valve Cummins engine with a 12-valve injection pump. This configuration is sought after because of its horsepower abilities. Since the truck is making quite a bit of power, Tony has backed this engine up with the necessary insurance upgrades, too.
For fuel, the engine features a 12-mm injection pump by Seth Farrell that has 5K governor springs, 26-degrees of timing, 0.93 lines, and tubes, 6×20 injectors, a 188/220 camshaft from Hamilton Cams, heavy-duty pushrods, 110-lb valve springs, and a FASS 240 lift pump. Matching with the fuel perfectly, Tony’s Fummins has a Stainless Diesel exhaust manifold hanging off the engine which is home to a Borg Warner S475 turbocharger.
Per Tony, which is super believable because who wouldn’t love a 700-horsepower toy, “It is such a fun, rowdy truck to drive.” Backing this monster is a full-manual 48RE transmission that has billet input, intermediate, and output shafts and a triple-disc torque converter.
