The rumor mill has been buzzing around the 2015 Mustang in recent weeks. Officially debuted this year at the Detroit Auto Show, the all new mustang features a wide range of power options under the hood. The engine options for the 2015 Ford Mustang range from an inline 4 cylinder (2.3L) EcoBoost engine to the larger higher performance Coyote 5.0 V8.
By offering these engines Ford is hoping to cast a wide net having something for everyone. Indeed, the I4 should help secure those buyers looking for good performance (300+ horsepower) and yet great efficiency. The new Mustang should be able to secure the most fuel efficient car in its class.
During a recent interview with Bob Fascetti, Ford’s powertrain boss, he told GoAuto, “…we need to go with fuel consumption we are looking at all our options…And diesel is one of those options, along with hybrids and electric.”
We are sure there are many purists out there that think this is blasphemy, but to us, it is a sign of changing tides. Obviously, at this stage of the game a comment coming from someone in Fascetti’s position indicates that we probably won’t see a diesel in this body style, however it does indicate that future models could indeed no longer need spark plugs.
We are certainly keeping an eye out for further details as they unravel. Who knows, a comment like this may be a way of Ford testing the waters to see if there is enough interest. It isn’t like they don’t already have quite a few engines to pull from that may be able to fit in the car.
