$100,000 Production Pickup Truck. Have We Hit That Point?

There was a day when a pickup was just a truck. It was meant to do work on the ranch, haul everything under the sun and go anywhere. Over the years, pickups have morphed into a no compromise family vehicle that can do anything, go anywhere, and handle anything all while providing the comforts of many luxury vehicles.

It wasn’t that long ago that options like moon roofs, rear entertainment systems, and even leather weren’t offered. As these “creature comforts” have worked their way into our trucks, the sticker price has been climbing higher and higher. In addition to the “creature comforts”, new technologies and more advanced powertrains have driven up the pricing as well. It isn’t uncommon to see a sticker price on a well-equipped truck rivaling those of some luxury vehicles.

At what point is the price of a truck so high, that you almost cannot use it as a truck because it cost too much? Is the average ranch hand or roustabouts going to be able to afford a 40, 50 or 60 thousand dollar truck?

Recently we found a listing on eBay for a $100,000 bone stock, production truck being sold by Lipscomb Auto Center in Bowie, Texas. The truck is a 2014 Sierra 3500 Heavy Duty Denali that is a crew cab long bed dually. The truck does feature a 6.6 Duramax with a 6 speed Allison behind it and it is 4 wheel drive with navigation and lots of other options. Still, is being one of the first people to buy a 2014 Denali worth 100k?

You tell us; is this truck worth 100k?

While this seems to be an isolated case and according to Kelley Blue Book “The Fair Market Range for this car in your area is $55,351 – $58,062” (Our area is Texas in this case). But how often have you been on the lot of a new vehicle dealer and seen $60,000 and $70,000 price tags. It wasn’t that long ago when a fully equipped truck was $45K. With the new emissions standards and increased fuel efficiency standards coming into play in the coming years, the cost of these trucks will continue to rise. How much are you willing to pay?
