When you are providing the turbochargers to IndyCar and several top-line builds and racers, you learn and make great advances in design. BorgWarner has created new “enhanced turbo cores” in its AirWerks series SX-E turbocharger line and EFR™ (Engineered For Racing) turbocharger line that address several improvements over the already reliable and affordable high performance turbos.
“The E stands for enhancement,” says Turbo Systems Project Engineer, Kurt Henderson. “We have done a fully new forge-milled compressor wheel design and five axis machined. The compressor cover has a particular geometry on the volute in the design together with the wheel to give the best performance possible. We get thirty percent more flow and a lot better efficiency with the same wheel.”
“Our new S200 SX-E, for example, is rated from 300 to 550 horsepower. How we get that rating is by how much airflow the compressor will support. The typical 550 horsepower capable unit will flow 55 pounds per minute.” The new E series turbos range in power enhancement from 300 to 1500 horsepower. The applications can vary from a 2.0 liter four cylinder gas motor to a large diesel.
The SX-E product line, as turbos go, is very affordable and made in the USA and available through distributers worldwide with kits. Also on display in the large SEMA booth were EFR turbocharger engine kits including a Full-Race produced 2.3-liter Ford Mustang EcoBoost kit, an AAM produced 3.7-liter Nissan 3707Z/Infiniti G37 kit and an APR produced 2.0T Audi A3/S3 and VW GTI/Golf R kit.
