If you’re into custom cars, rat rods, show cars, off-road vehicles or just cars in general, it’s obvious the SEMA show is the place for you. Fortunately for us, we have been blasting through the show all week, finding some of the most unique builds in the world. We would expect to see wild rides here, but what we’ve found at the Cummins booth is awesome.
As expected, the company is showcasing their R2.8-liter Cummins kit engine in the booth, but just adjacent to the booth rests an absolutely incredible and unique build. What you’re looking at, is a 1964 Volvo Amazon 122. Out of the said 359,917 of the two-door models made, only one has a Cummins diesel engine in it.
Among the small but torquey engine, the Amazon features a Tremec TR606 six-speed transmission, LS-style transmission adapter, Tom Woods 1310 driveshaft, a limited slip Ford 9-inch rear axle fitted with 3.25 gear ratio, and disk brakes. If you’re into old-school Volvo cars and diesel engines, your dream has officially come true.
With the somewhat additional weight added from this engine, the chassis has been rebuilt to sustain the engine and was modified with reinforcements. Underneath the Cummins engine rests a Mustang II rack-and-pinion steering system, two-inch lowering springs, and shocks on all four corners.
Although this isn't the factory engine, this car is still quite capable of everyday options. Kenwood flip out radio, Dakota Digital gauges, tilt steering, cruise control, and a hydraulic handbrake.
We can’t wait to get more information on this build from the crew at Cummins, so stay tuned for more. For more information about Cummins, be sure to check out its website.
