Gas and diesel engines that use a power-adder need strong connecting rods that can withstand the extra horsepower that’s being created by the power-adder. The best way to approach this situation is to upgrade the connecting rods, but that can be difficult if money is tight. Callies has found a way to give racers on a budget a strong rod thanks to its new Compstar Xtreme line of connecting rods.

The Compstar Xtreme connecting rod is made from 4340 steel and uses either ARP 2000 or L19 fasteners to hold the rod cap on. Engineers at Callies strengthened the Compstar Xtreme rods by adding thickness to the flange of the H-beam part of the rod, while also reducing the depth of the cut towards the center of the rod. The Compstar Xtreme rods have been lightened by removing any non-essential weight from the top of the rod’s beam.

Brook Piper from Callies talks about how the company approached the design of the Xtreme line of connecting rods.

“As we looked at the overall market, we felt there was a void in offerings for customers that needed something stronger than our Compstar H beams, before stepping up to one of the top-tier rods like our Ultra Series. We’re expanding into the diesel market with our crankshaft and camshafts offerings, so we needed a connecting rod option too, that’s where this rod comes in. So, we went back to an older design we had sold back in the 1990s and tuned it up. This rod is for engines that make 1,200 to 1,800 horsepower.”
