Mil-Spec Automotive H1 #004 Revealed: One Badass Baja Beast

Mil-Spec Automotive (MSA), the aftermarket mad scientists behind some of the most badass Hummer H1 builds in history, has released specs on its latest creation. Code-named Launch Edition #004, this monstrous piece of mechanical mayhem has been engineered from the ground up to be a bonafide “Baja Beast,” and dammit if we don’t want one.

Typically, due to its hulking size and broad width, the military-spec Hummer H1 is far from being our first choice for off-road endeavors, where narrow trails and tight terrain often prove challenging for even the average Jeep enthusiast. But in a wide-open desert landscape, this monster seems like an obvious choice.

The MSA treatment graces an H1 with a luxurious interior.

According to MSA’s press release on the vehicle, #004 will now be the second unit made available to the public in a four door-hardtop configuration from the brand, engineered as a “callback to the original Launch Edition prototype” built over three years ago. With its Desert Tan color scheme, exclusive 40-inch tires (something not normally offered on MSA’s Launch Editions), and duck canvas/black leather interior scheme, the #004 is both imposing and appealing at the same time.

A few other options to ponder include a 12,000-pound Warn winch upgrade with remote, a heavy duty brush guard, reinforced rear step bumper, a “Baja Package” (complete with powder coated tubular steel structure and overhead spare tire rack), and a “Bold Body and Tire Package.” The latter of the lot is perhaps the more intriguing, as it boasts an eight-inch increase in overall track spread and seven-inch increase in body width all around, making the already broad Hummer H1 even more menacing.

As for performance mods, MSA’s modified Duramax 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel V8 eliminates the power issues often associated with the stock H1 by giving it 500 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque to play with, all attached to an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic gearbox. From there, MSA’s in-house cabin design team implemented a laundry list of luxury components to improve both driver and passenger comfort while looking stellar in the process. It’s an interior that’s built to withstand years of abuse.

Powering the #004 is a Duramax 6.6-liter diesel V8 and an Allison six-speed transmission.

Founded upon the notion that the perfect truck can be created with just three core principles, MSA lives by the mantra that “execution by design, attention to detail, and integrity in craft” will make the H1 platform thrive. MSA CEO Adam Mitchell calls #004 “a reflection of our roots and where it all started three years ago.” At its outset, MSA has been dedicated to turning a vehicle that was notorious for being under-powered, inefficient, and uncomfortable into what you see here today.

So if you are interested in dropping a cool $250,478 on a base model, be sure to peruse the list of standard MSA Launch Edition H1 features. Note that each vehicle is eligible for a “factory direct” rebate if applicable, which might help offset that $22,000 Executive Interior Package that’s worth contemplating.
