Imagine a world where gas and diesel powered vehicles didn’t exist. What would that world look like? Well if Liberal Democrats in the UK gets their way, we might see just what that world could be like. Currently there is a proposal that would eliminate everything but ultra low emission vehicles and electric cars in the U.K…. Could this actually happen?
As part of a green movement, the party recently announced a £100million ‘prize’ for car companies who build the first popular ultra low emission vehicle. What is defined as “popular”? Here are the stipulations:
- Car companies must create a family car.
- Have it breaks into the top five in UK sales.
- Obviously must have ultra low emissions (Ulev).
For those that are wondering, Ulev is defined as a vehicle that has a C02 emissions below 75g/km. According to DailyMail.co.uk, the average for new cars today is 128.3g.
Liberal democrat leader Nick Clegg pointed out that for the first time since the 70’s Britain now sells more cars than it buys. “However, we need to go further and faster in making Britain a world leader in low emission vehicles by providing the right incentives and infrastructure to attract green investment and green jobs. This isn’t just about re-balancing the economy, it’s also about tackling dangerous levels of air pollution that reduce average life expectancy by up to eight months,” Clegg told DailyMail.co.UK. “Our Liberal Democrat £100 million prize fund will spark a low emission car revolution in Britain and help to build a stronger and greener economy for years to come.”
So just imagine that, in 25 years, only ULEV vehicles could possibly be permitted in the U.K. Is this just the first of many green initiatives that we will begin to see across the globe? Has the end of diesel and gas engines started to take place? There are already cities banning diesel cars and there are states banning diesel modifications. Leave us a comment below with your opinion.
