Ram’s “Rebel”, for those who don’t know, has been a specific trim level of the Ram 1500 full-size pickup truck. The Ram Rebel is a more off-road-oriented variant of the Ram pickup, designed to appeal to customers who seek a rugged and adventurous driving experience. The Ram Rebel typically comes with features that make it well-suited for off-road driving, such as off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, styling enhancements, interior comfort, and a bevy of other off-road-centric packages.
With Ford’s Raptor being a hot and heavy contender on the streets (and off-road), Ram had to come up with an answer. However, consumers were unhappy that the Rebel was never introduced into the “heavy-duty” segment of their lineup. That is, until now. The 2023 Ram Rebel 2500 will finally come with Ram’s powerplant that we all know and love, the 6.7 liter Cummins engine. You may be asking, “Hasn’t that always been an option?”
No, the introduction of the heavy-duty Rebel crew cab is a fresh addition for 2023. It caters to those seeking a Ram Heavy Duty with qualities akin to the Power Wagon with a touch of refinement, and a Cummins turbo diesel engine. All we can say now is FINALLY. However, there is a catch.
The heavy-duty Rebel equipped with the 410-horsepower HEMI, boasts an impressive towing capacity of 16,870 pounds. However, potential owners of the new Rebel might find it frustrating to opt for the Cummins engine. The Cummins, which delivers 370 horsepower and a mighty 850 lb-ft of peak torque, generates nearly twice the total torque of the gas-fired HEMI V8 but its considerable weight requires a significant portion of that torque for its own propulsion. Unfortunately, the high-output version of the Cummins, producing 1,075 lb-ft of peak torque, is not available with the Rebel package, putting an end to any hopes of boasting four-digit torque-production capabilities.
So, can you get your off-road capabilities twisted together with some diesel power? Short answer, yes. What are your thoughts on this? Should RAM make it possible to have four-digit capabilities in the torque department? Would you like to own one of these? Let us know in the comments below.
