Keeping Cool As Things Heat Up!

Heat management should be a course that most of us have to take if we are going to be doing anything under the hood. As a former technician, I am all too familiar with the extreme heat that our engines put off during the summer, as I worked in Arizona in a garage that wasn’t air conditioned. Later in life, as I started modifying and working on performance vehicles, heat management became a topic of importance as it not only affects performance, but reliability.

Recently, we ran a towing tips story where we interviewed an expert who has spent the better part of his life working as a hot shot. His most important focus was and is heat management. Companies like Heatshield Products have a number of products that can work to reflect the heat, contain the heat or help to manage it.

Recently, they have taken their widely popular and installer friendly Heatshield Armor and created Header Armor. Now most of us don’t have headers, but these kits will work just as well on our exhaust manifolds. The beauty in the Header Armor is the material itself.

The Header Armor is a multi-layer product. The outside of the armor is made up of .004” aluminum. Don’t let the thin layer fool you. The aluminum serves as a reflector and battles against radiant heat. To combat conductive heat (heat transfer from touch) the other layers are made up of ceramic insulation between .250” to .500”.

Now, given that the Header Armor is comprised of ceramic insulation and aluminum sheeting, you are probably thinking that this would be “a mother” to install. Well, you would be wrong. The aluminum actually works heavily in your favor when it comes to installation. The aluminum is thick enough to form easily, yet thin enough that it can be cut with a decent pair of scissors. This stuff is extremely easy to install and work.

Once you have it in place, just simply use some thermal ties or wire to hold it in place. It really is that easy.

This thermal image was taken with their Heatshield Armor. Now, if you add this same amount of heat sheilding to the headers, you almost wouldn’t know the engine was running!
