Video: Brett Deutsch Goes 8.8 @ 158 mph in his ’69 C10 Duramax

Brett

Brett Deutsch’s 1969 Chevrolet C10 is a beautiful truck regardless of how he uses it. When he got the truck from his grandfather in ’98; he and his father started stripping it down and did a full restoration on the truck. Even though that was more than 15 years ago, the truck still looks fantastic.

Originally, the truck had a gas engine it in (well, his grandfather had a 3 cylinder Detroit Diesel but Deutsch installed a gas engine), and in 2008; Deutsch came across a deal he couldn’t pass up. So, now with a Duramax and Allison transmission, all he had to do was fit it in the truck and complete the conversion. Not wanting to destroy the truck, he actually bought a junk C10 to test fit everything.

Brett_4All said and done, it worked beautifully doing the conversion that way because the truck looks factory done. Deutsch did an amazing job fitting everything that the truck still looks showroom good. Now don’t get me wrong, there was a ton of work getting everything to fit, but it did fit after moving and extending everything from the driver’s seat forward. The truck even still retains A/C!

After deciding to make the truck a NHRDA Pro Street truck (4500lb minimum) in 2011, Deutsch started figuring out ways to lighten the truck up. Instead of pulling out the creature comforts like most people would have, Deutsch, started looking at the frame, radiator and other components that weigh a lot. Bit by bit, he redid most of the chassis to cut the weight he needed to. He ended up getting the truck down to 4650 Lbs.

Brett_3At weight, Deutsch focused on making power. Originally, he installed ARP studs, 50% over Exergy Performance injectors, Danville Performance modified CP3 pump, and 68mm VVT turbo. After playing around with the power for a year or so, he bent all 8 connecting rods and needed to rebuild the engine.

The second engine featured a stock block with a main girdle, Carrillo Rods, Mahle Motorsports pistons with custom bowls (Jon Fingers’ design), SoCal Diesel Stage 1 heads and camshaft. For a charger, he upgraded to a 72mm VVT high pressure and ran a BorgWarner S400 with an 83mm compressor wheel.

After running this combination for a short period of time, he started having issues with the built Allison. So, he reached out to Brian’s Truck Shop and ended up swapping to a Ford 4R100 automatic. The 4R100 doesn’t require the same amount of defueling between shifts and the converter is a lot stronger according to Deutsch. To control the 4R100, Deutsch runs a PCS transmission controller. With Danville Performance still working their EFILive tuning magic, the truck was running north of 1100 horsepower.

Over this past winter, Deutsch again went into the engine to see if he could get a little more out of it. He is still running the same bottom end, but this time, Wagler Competition set him up with some high flowing heads. To best utilize the full benefits of the increased flow, Bullseye Performance supplied a set of triples. Thanks to the guys at HSP Diesel, the triples fit nicely in the engine compartment and work well with Deutsch’s setup.

Brett Deutsch said that he really couldn’t have done it without, “My wife and kids, my parents, Danville Performance, Brian’s Truck Shop, HSP Diesel, Wagler Competition, Bullseye Power, Flexicorps Racing, and Deutsch’s Truck Repair (Dad)!”
