EFILive tuning separates a good race program from a dominant one when pushing a Cummins diesel to the limit. Getting a competition truck dialed in requires specialized software adjustments and an understanding of complex fuel maps. Brett recently acquired a back-half chassis previously owned by his late friend Zack Danner. Preparing this lightweight Ram for the Seventy2Fast race means tuning the proven powertrain to find every available horsepower.

Swapping The New Race Powertrain

The crew spent its weekend pulling the original stock engine out to make room for Brett’s custom setup. It carefully lowered in a modified Cummins block featuring Street Fighter rods and a class-legal 72-millimeter turbocharger. A single injection pump paired with oversized fuel components provides the necessary volume. Before bolting the drivetrain together, Brett inspected his automatic transmission. The internal clutches looked pristine despite enduring dozens of dirt drag passes and thousands of heavy towing miles.

Advanced EFILive Tuning Strategies

Lavon Miller took over the keyboard to calibrate the engine control module. Upgrading to oversized injectors requires precise changes to the main command tables. Lavon explained: “So, with big injectors, its 300% over now. We shorten the pulse width, and we can get a larger fuel shot in a shorter window.” He manipulated the pilot injection to reduce haze at idle while turning it off completely during full-throttle runs.

Chasing Power On The Dyno

Rolling the truck onto the rollers revealed immediate performance potential. Initial dyno hits showed a rail pressure surge that Lavon quickly smoothed out by adding a small current increase to the fuel regulator. Finding extra power output in a restricted class forces builders to experiment constantly. Lavon stated: “We’re trying to find that last 10, 20 horsepower because in this class, when everybody has the same amount of air, finding that last little detail is very important.” Swapping the exhaust pipe for a 5-inch hood stack instantly freed up 14 horsepower.

Final Thoughts On The Build

The rigorous EFILive tuning session pushed the truck to an impressive 1,069 peak horsepower. Reaching this milestone on a restricted turbocharger with a factory intercooler highlights the efficiency of the calibration work. Brett now possesses a highly competitive race truck fully prepared to dominate the dragstrip this season.
