Heavy-duty diesel pickups are the kings of the road when it comes to towing. If you’ve got a large or heavy trailer and tow frequently, there’s nothing else that beats the capability, safety, and comfort of a heavy-duty pickup. And it’s a big deal when a new or refreshed heavy-duty pickup comes to market. That’s why we were very excited when Ram finally pulled back the curtain on its refreshed 2025 Heavy Duty pickup lineup including improved Cummins towing.
Built with towing at the forefront, the improved Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 Heavy Duty pickups pack a new 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine. Gone is the two-engine strategy of yesteryear. Instead, all Cummins-powered Rams now get 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. Combined with an all-new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, the 2025 Ram Heavy Duty can now tow up to 36,610 pounds. That feat is achieved by a Ram 3500 regular-cab long-bed four-wheel drive. On the other end of the spectrum, the 2025 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Mega Cab four-wheel drive tows as little as 14,630 pounds when fit with the Cummins engine.
Advanced Trailering Technology
Sheer power isn’t the only thing that makes Ram’s 2025 Heavy Duty pickups excellent tow rigs. These vehicles also come packed with suites of advanced trailering technology. New trailer tow pages in the truck’s Uconnect 5-powered central infotainment screen offer the ability to view and monitor a compressive list of trailering information, including the trailer light check function, available trailer tire pressure monitoring, trailer brake status, and auxiliary camera view shortcuts. Trailer reverse steering control, which is located below the touchscreen, allows drivers to rotate the dial left or right in the direction they want the trailer to go; the system takes over steering duties. Setup is simple, with just a few basic measurements needed. A center stop light cargo view camera is available, along with 360-degree cameras and trailer reverse guidance. Auxiliary upfitter switches are available, along with a fifth-wheel and gooseneck prep package. Ram’s new telescoping trailer tow mirrors are among the best-in-the-business. Sorry diehards, they don’t flip vertical anymore.
Deciphering Ram’s Trailer Towing Specs
Knowing a few things ahead of time will help tremendously when it comes to understanding Ram’s trailer towing charts. First, and most importantly, the maximum trailer weight rating given is based on a properly equipped base (Tradesman) model. Climbing the trim ladder and adding options also adds weight, which will decrease actual towing and hauling capacity. What is true for a Tradesman is not for a similar Limited.
Ram rounds payload and maximum trailer weight to the nearest 10-pound. Payload is the truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) minus its base curb weight. Payload and trailer weight rating are mutually exclusive and are not to be combined. Gross combined weight rating is the maximum allowable total weight of the vehicle, payload, and trailer, and is never to be exceeded.
Ram calculates its trailer weight rating utilizing the SAE J2807 standard, which provides for a base occupant weight of 300 pounds (driver and passenger), 100 pounds of options, and an allowance for trailering equipment (75 pounds for a conventional hitch, 40 pounds for a gooseneck, and 250 pounds for a fifth-wheel.) A fifth-wheel hitch is required for all loads over 23,000 pounds, and a gooseneck is required for loads exceeding 30,000 pounds.
