One critical part of a diesel engine’s life is the oil that runs through it. Like all engines, a diesel engine has many moving parts. As the parts of the engine rub against each other, the force of friction creates heat. That’s where the engine oil comes in. The engine oil lubricates the engine and absorbs the heat, allowing the internal components to work together effectively without overheating.
The oil filter’s job is to keep the engine oil clean by separating particulate matter such as soot caused by oil breakdown, from the burned fuel and metal fragments. Without superior filtration and regular oil changes, contaminants build up on internal engine parts, resulting in restricted flow, reduced oil pressure, and hot-spots. This can lead to abnormal wear of engine components like bearings, cam, and crankshaft.
We turned to the experts at HUBB Filters and their reusable oil filter for Project DeadSpool, our 2004 Dodge Ram drag truck project. With this filter, we will be able to reuse the oil filter thanks to the ultrasonic cleaner. HUBB Filters also offers a lifetime oil filter for many different applications.
The design of the filter was based on the idea of protecting the environment, better engine protection, and saving consumers money. “Over eight hundred million oil filters are used each year in the United States,” said Christopher Hubbard, founder and chief scientist of HUBB Filters. “The Environmental Protection Agency requires automobile owners to dispose of oil filters into landfills. Unfortunately, over four hundred million of those filters never make it to the landfill.”
The HUBB filter looks and works completely different than a conventional oil filter. The difference starts with how the oil flows into the filter. The HUBB filter features two large kidney-shaped openings in its baseplate that channels the oil around the exterior of the primary filter. These large openings significantly increase the oil flow compared to the conventional filter.
HUBB uses a filter-in-a-filter design where most of the oil is filtered by the primary filter from the outside to the inside. When the pressure increases during acceleration, HUBB’s first pressure differential valve opens and oil flows into the secondary filter where it is filtered from the inside to the outside of the filter.
This opposite flow from the primary filter eliminates cross-contamination of the clean and dirty oil, allowing only the clean oil to flow through the center of the filter and back into the engine. The purpose of the secondary filter is to enable the HUBB filter to keep filtering your oil at a higher pressure.
Conventional filters do not have this capability and when faced with increased pressure it goes into a bypass mode which contaminates the oil as the filter stopped working. To further protect your engine, the HUBB filter has a second pressure differential valve that opens when it see’s excessive pressure which ensures that the engine is never without oil.
HUBB’s design, unlike a conventional oil filter, increases the oil flow rate to the engine by five times. The filter efficiency is 99-percent of contaminants at 25 microns versus only 52-percent for the conventional filter.
Clean And Reuse
We removed the conventional oil filter from Project DeadSpool to replace it with our new HUBB unit. The only similarity that the HUBB and regular oil filter share are the shapes. The Hubb filter has a high-performance look and has some substance to it. We can already tell that this will be a conversation piece at shows because of its shine in the engine bay.
The filter requires a HUBB Filters Ultrasonic Cleaning Station. Combining the cleaner with the specially formulated cleaning concentrate you can have a like new filter, in only a few minutes. This cleaning system includes many great features for a quick and easy maintenance.
The filter can be cleaned in just a few steps:
- After removing the two inner filters, disassemble, and place in the rack.
- Place the rack with the inner filters into the HUBB cleaning machine.
- Fill the HUBB cleaning machine with the specially formulated cleaning concentrate plus water until the filters are covered or reach the fill line in the tank.
- Run the 10-minute cycle.
- Remove the filters from the HUBB cleaning machine and allow to dry.
- Reassemble inner filters, screw them back onto the baseplate, and the thread on the filter cover.
- Recycle the used cleaning concentrate and water in accordance with the EPA guidelines.
