Salty Box Racing: “Sooty” The 204 MPH Cummins Powered Record Holder

Obviously, when you see a crew cab, long bed pick up truck you aren’t expecting to see a parachute hanging off the back. Salty Box Racing’s “Sooty” is an unbelievable three-ton Ram with a ton of power.

Owner Tim Boyle, of North East England, UK, is the mastermind behind this speed demon. We caught up with Tim to see why it is he chose to go with a compound turbo diesel to compete in this sport.

It’s no diesel, but man does it look mean!

Back in 2005, Boyle started out with a 1931 Model A Ford for the salt flats. But after messing around with the diesel powered tow truck, that got the Model A to the track, things changed. “We got the diesel bug,” said Boyle. “After playing with the diesel, we decided to make a diesel salt flat truck.”

In 2012 he ran a diesel truck on salt for the first time. The truck equipped with a stock 6.7-liter Cummins with nothing but custom tuning that went 166 mph.

Diesel Power Plant

Boyle’s truck is capable of 1,300 horsepower thanks to some serious fuel and air. R&R Billet Rods, Hamilton Cam, Dual Cp3s, 200 percent over injectors, and a ported head is what it took for the long block.

The current set up on Sooty is a T6 flange, s482 fed by a Garrett GTX5508R atmospheric charger. Custom tuning to make everything work properly is done by the team at Hardway Performance with EFI Live.

Massive turbos? Massive air!

The Record

On August 14, 2016, Boyle piloted Sooty down the Bonneville Salt Flats at 204.679 mph which took the land speed record in his class. “With bigger injectors, we can make 1,500 horsepower, but we need to control the EGT’s”, said Boyle. “With that being said, we can expect an even bigger number at the end of the track.”

Stay tuned as Boyle gets ready to take Sooty out for an upcoming event where he will attempt to break his own record. Do you think he can break the 205 mph barrier? Let us know in the comments below!

Going 204.679 mph doesn’t even sound real for 6,200-pound truck
