Whenever we think the world may have run out of ideas with what to do with diesels, a trip to the wide world of Instagram takes care of those concerns right away. That’s where we get to see some great builds and learn about some cool shops too, which was how we got in touch with PowerHouse Diesel out of Waller, Texas.
Headed by Luis Avendano, the shop has been in business for two years now and has built up a steady stream of customers as Avendano’s work and honesty have spoken to diesel enthusiasts there. Avendano started out as a helper at a car dealership, working his way up as the years progressed. “I got a diesel certification and then I decided to do it on my own,” he told us. “In May will be two years. It’s going! I finally have the shop where I want. I have a bunch of customers and word-of-mouth is what does our advertising.”
Customers come to Avendano to have many types of services performed, with just two workers – Avendano and a part-time employee – on hand to pull it off, which they do again and again. “The shop is 3,000 square feet, maybe a little more,” said Avendano. “We have six bays and three lifts. We do all types of service, from repairs to performance upgrades. We do a lot of upgrades like injectors, exhaust systems and turbochargers, all that stuff. We work on anything diesel.”
One other important service PowerHouse offers is the ever-popular tuning upgrade. Avendano has had experience with, and continues to use many brands of tuners, but one brand he enjoys is Edge Products. “Edge was actually the first programmer I started using when I opened the shop,” he said. “I remember installing one on a customer’s 5.9-liter Cummins, it was the Edge with Attitude. He loved it for its power gains.”
“The company’s products are great, and customers love it when they can see the heads-up displays and watch all the parameters going on like temperature and pressure,” continued Avendano. “Edge programmers are always easy to use and come with simple instructions that make installations simple to understand.”
PowerHouse Diesel is definitely doing alright for itself, but it’s the simple things that give Avendano the encouragement to stay the course. “Owning my own shop is wonderful,” he said. “I enjoy the ability to choose which vehicles to work on, have no restrictions to make my customers happy, and take pride in my work. Those things are what give me the most joy.”
So if you find yourself near Houston one day with a diesel that needs some TLC, we think it’s safe to say you’ll be in good hands if you head over to PowerHouse Diesel. Check out the shop here, and learn more about Edge Products by visiting its website and Facebook page.
