The Cummins powerplant of this big red truck makes a hefty amount of horsepower and torque, and that’s just the way owner John Roloson likes it. As an oilfield worker in Pennsylvania, he knows what it means to get down and dirty in the name of an honest day’s work, and just as he works hard, he plays hard, too.
It was from working in the oilfields that John got into diesels. “I was always driving them to haul trailers,” he said. “I had an interest in them for a long time and I love the performance and the way they look, too.”
John gave the truck a 2.5-inch leveling kit, an aFe Power cold air intake kit, straight-pipe exhaust, EFI Live tuning, and last but not least, a set of 35-inch Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 tires.
The truck John went for was a 2012 Ram 2500, armed with the stout 6.7-liter straight six generating 35o hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. “I bought the truck from the dealership totally stock,” he said. “I was looking for a diesel and found this one for the right price. I knew exactly what I wanted to do it.”
John followed through and installed a 2.5-inch leveling kit, an aFe Power cold air intake kit, straight-pipe exhaust from the turbocharger back, and an EFI Live tuner as well. But one of his favorite changes to the truck has to be from slapping on a set of Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ P3 tires.

John is in love with the performance of the MTZ P3s, as well as the gentle humming sound they make on the road.
“I’ve always loved Mickey Thompson tires and how iconic the name is, especially when paired with a Cummins. And, of course, my girlfriend has the same tires on her Chevy so that helped a little too, haha,” John laughed.
We reviewed these exact same tires back in 2013, and found them to be a prime choice in Mickey Thompson’s lineup. One of the finer points of the tire was its hybrid design involving big tread blocks and open voids, the better for traction. And who could neglect to mention the famous Sidebiter sidewall that makes a Mickey Thompson tire a Mickey Thompson tire?
“My favorite part about having these tires is the performance of them and how good they are driving,” commented John. “I also love the humming on them on the road, it’s one of my most favorite sounds in the world.”
John has gotten some great use out of the Cummins since owning it, but he wants to do more here in 2016. “I’ve taken the truck off-road near where I live,” he said. “It hasn’t been to any events yet but I plan on taking it to the Bloomsburg 4×4 Jamboree in July with my girlfriend, who’s also taking her truck.”
It’s almost certain that John and his girlfriend will have a good time at that event next month, and the ATZ P3s will take care of keeping them both on solid ground. For more information, check out the Mickey Thompson website and Facebook page.
