Welcome back to Diesels On The Web, where we look around the internet for what’s cooking with regard to diesel. From general topics to videos to forums and more, we invite you to get a quick peek at how diesel showed up on the information superhighway this week.
Forums: Deciding Between Two Super Trucks (Power Stroke Forum), Wal-Mart DEF Banter (Cummins Forum), Build Quality Bellyaching (Duramax Forum)
One hot topic on the Power Stroke Forum revolved around user 87gnx debating a purchase between two trucks, both of them 4×4, single-rear-wheel, crew cab XLTs: a 2003 with 266,000 miles, and a 2006 with 43,000 miles.
The 2003 had been meticulously cared for by its mechanic owner, while the 2006 was not well-used. “The guy also wants a small fortune for [the 2006 one] (22k),” said 87gnx. “I’ve pretty much decided against it, but thought I would run it by you [guys.]”
After some deliberation, 87gnx went with the 2003. “I couldn’t be happier,” he said.
The Cummins Forum got into it over diesel exhaust fluid. Minnow101 started the thread, talking about how he had tested store-brand DEF (from Wal-Mart) and found it didn’t pass muster. “[I’ve] been using the Wal-Mart brand for two years now,” he said. “Never an issue until today.”
Fellow forum members launched into the pros and cons of testing tools, expiration meanings, concentration percentages, pump DEF versus off-the-shelf DEF, and more. “I think we may have jumped off the deep end with this,” said user dillonjm.
Which type of DEF would you trust more?
“I am going to start testing my fuel before filling up,” quipped mattswaggs. “I’m thinking taste test, anyone have any better ideas?”
“I worry more about getting hit by an asteroid,” joked tjpatte. “Well, and circus clowns, like everyone else.”

Meanwhile, Duramax owners were swallowing a bitter pill. Nasdaqinvestments got on to discuss his 2017 3500 Denali, not even 1,000 miles old and already “in the shop four times… These new trucks just seem to be all headache and for 74K, I don’t think it’s crazy to want something to work correctly.”
Other forum members swooped in to comment. Redwngr explained that it could come from either “decel tick,” which occurs in the fuel system and comes during deceleration, or from “typewriter tick,” which is simply a Duramax characteristic.
The discussion devolved into bellyaching and speculation from other users, but user 3TimeFelon brought it back with his post. “Guys, that ticking you hear when the vehicle is warm and barely rolling is the DEF injector,” he said. “Not sure why it is so noisy versus previous years.”
Strictly Cummins shared this photo of the RLC Motorsports drag racing truck, Orange Crush. How will the truck do in 2018? If RLC has anything to say about it – very, very well.
From totaltrucksus, we see this underglowing Duramax belonging to anthony_graham_. Is underglow too much or tasteful? We think it works well for this particular truck.
cummins_cadillac_ shared a pic of a sleek black first-gen Cummins dually. These game-changing trucks ushered in the era of turbodiesel for the common man, and seeing one looking beautiful like this one is really cool.
