Ford Recalls 295,449 6.7L Diesel Super Duty Trucks Over CP4 Issue

If you’re running a 2020 to 2022 Ford F-Series Super Duty with the 6.7L Power Stroke, there’s a new Bosch CP4 recall that you’re likely already aware of. However, if you drive a 2011 to 2019 Super Duty or a 2011 to 2016 Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra with a Duramax you’ll want to pay attention.

Ford has launched Recall No. 24S78 targeting certain 2020–2022 diesel-powered trucks equipped with the Bosch CP4 RP7 high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP). The core problem as Ford sees it, premature HPFP failures leading to loss of power and no-start conditions. However, we know the issue goes much deeper.

The Issue With The Bosch CP4

The Bosch CP4 high-pressure fuel pump has a well-known reputation in diesel circles for being finicky — and this recall underscores that. Even though Ford insists there have been no related accidents or fires, a fuel pump failure that leads to power loss isn’t something diesel truck owners can afford to ignore.

While Ford claims the symptoms of a bad CP4 are hard starting and loss of power, we know the truth is much more dire. The CP4 doesn’t just go out quietly. When it fails, it often grenades, sending tiny metal shards throughout your entire fuel system — we’re talking injectors, lines, fuel rails, the works. At that point, it’s not just a pump replacement. You’re looking at a complete fuel system overhaul that can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 or more.

The CP4 was designed for the high-lubricity diesel fuels used in Europe — not the ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) we have in the U.S. Without enough lubrication, the pump’s internals grind themselves down fast. The result? Metal-on-metal destruction and a shortened lifespan. Issues don’t stop there. Even small amounts of air in the fuel line can cause cavitation inside the CP4. This leads to excessive wear and eventual failure. Bad seals, improper filter changes, or fuel system leaks can all introduce air into the mix.

And, as highlighted in Ford’s recent recall, aged or poor-quality biodiesel can accelerate CP4 failure. Water, debris, and fuel that’s been sitting too long can gum up the works and kill the pump quicker than you think.

The Ford Recall Backstory

Ford began investigating CP4 failures in late 2021 after a noticeable uptick in warranty claims. Initially, the culprit was pinned on aged biodiesel — leftover in tanks too long during pandemic lockdowns — which degraded performance and caused internal pump damage. Though Ford replaced the RP7 pump with an improved RP8 version during the 2021 production run, the damage was done. By late 2024, over 3,000 warranty claims and nearly 500 field reports had been logged.

The Current CP4 Recall Fix

In January of 2025, Ford finally issued a recall for 295,449 Power Stroke equipped trucks built between 2020 and 2022. Sadly, the fix isn’t what any of us would like to see. Ford dealers will update the powertrain control module software free of charge, saying the updates to the fuel system cooling strategy would alleviate the situation.

Cummins Fixed Right

This isn’t the first CP4 related recall. In June of 2022 Ram issued its own recall, NHTSA 21V-880, to address failing Bosch CP4.2 injection pumps. This recall covered approximately 222,400 vehicles built from 2019 to 2020. The solution that Ram and Cummins came up with was as beautiful as it was simple: replace the CP4.2 with the reliable CP3. And for the 2021 model year Cummins switched back to the CP3 for all production engines up until 2025.

And Now We Wait

The bottom line is this: if you have a 2020-2022 6.7-liter Power Stroke, check your vin and get in touch with the dealer. Have the recall performed and document everything. Everyone else, continue reporting issues caused by faulty Bosch CP4 pumps, hopefully the correct fix will be launched for everyone soon.
