Horsepower. I’m thinking of a clean analogy for it but bottom line, we can’t get enough of it. It’s fun to say, it’s fun to have, and it’s fun to use. Sometimes, what we have just isn’t enough and that is somewhat the case here. Project DeadSpool, our Cummins-powered drag truck project, is in need. With the help of this ZEX Diesel Nitrous System, we can do exactly what we want.
What is it we want? We’ve recently changed over to a large single turbocharger on this 6.7-Liter Cummins engine. It measures out to 80/96/1.32. Although this isn’t a monster turbo in terms of what is out there in this day in age, it’s big enough that it takes some heat to get it spooled. With the help of our higher stall stator in the torque converter and the large displacement of this engine, it does spool within reason.
It does take a few seconds to get fully spooled on the line and ready for take-off, so where does the nitrous come in? Well, it’s crucial, in my opinion, to keep as much heat out of the truck as possible. This includes the transmission and torque converter. When you’re brake torquing the truck attempting to spool this turbo, you’re generating heat holding that power back.
With the help of nitrous oxide, we can speed this process up exponentially. The faster this turbo can spool, the less time there will be to generate heat in these moving driveline parts. So, what do we have here? This is the ZEX Diesel Nitrous System and it will work with any EFI diesel engine and is adjustable from 35-horsepower up to 200-horsepower.
This nitrous system adds power with no additional tuning but really comes alive when used in tandem with other diesel engine performance components, such as power programmers and high-flow exhaust systems. For instance, we use custom tuning in this truck by Maverick Diesel. By more thoroughly burning the increased volume of diesel fuel entering the engine, the ZEX Diesel Nitrous System boosts power, reduces exhaust gas temperatures and cools the air inlet charge for any EFI diesel engine.

Their Racer’s Pak, Part Number #82001, is all of the goods. Nitrous Purge Kit, Bottle Pressure Gauge, Bottle Heater, Safety Blow Down Kit, and all of the hardware necessary to equip your diesel with nitrous oxide.
