Video: Dual Diesel Rat Rods From Welderup At SEMA 2014

When a man decides to build himself a rat rod, he’s already throwing convention out the window. Perfect paint, zero rust, and immaculate body panels are all elements that have no place on the car, so why bother adhering to any other norm?

dieselratrod_8That’s sort of the thinking behind these two vehicles built by Steve Darnell, owner of Welderup and reality star on Discovery Channel’s Vegas Rat Rods TV show. As discussed in this clip from 1320 Video, the cars represent a different approach to hot rods not only in looks, but in power as well.

That’s because both cars use Cummins motors, supplemented with twin turbochargers that force more than 80 pounds of pressure through the head. Sitting immediately behind Darnell is a ’29 Ford pickup, using a 3.9-liter 4BT that dynoes at 430 horsepower; quite remarkable when considering it’s just a four-cylinder mill, and the car itself weighs in at around 2,500 pounds.

The 4BT-powered Ford (left) makes over 400 horseepower, while the 6BT-powered Dodge (right) makes over 1,000 horsepower.

Behind and to the left of Darnell is a ’28 Dodge sedan, sporting a 5.9-liter 6BT that generates over 1,000 horsepower to the ground, according to Darnell. “The car is fun, man,” he says. “[My favorite thing about it] is just what it’s become. It’s almost a celebrity itself, and kind of the forefather for the diesel rat rod world.”

That celebrity status was no doubt helped by meme culture, which recently took a shot of the Dodge spewing black soot and white tire smoke and paired it with the words “F*** YOU AND YOUR PRIUS.” To that, Darnell issues no apologies for what the car is and represents.

Capping off the video is a segment of the Dodge doing what it does best, spewing smoke and laying rubber in the Las Vegas Convention Center parking lot. Darnell and his crew really knocked it out of the park on these cars, and here’s to hoping they can outdo themselves in 2015.
