Video: Liqui Moly Answers How Modern Engine Oils Work

Classic cars, modern engine oils, vintage engines, engine swaps …. there’s a lot to examine when selecting an engine oil for your car. Like most everything else in life, there’s not a “one size fits all” solution. Where you drive, how you drive, and what you drive are all major considerations.

In the video presented here, Steffen Niemietz, the Application Engineer for Liqui Moly‘s R&D department covers many of these questions. Don’t be fooled by modern cars or engines, after all, we have seen our fair share of modern engine swaps in vintage vehicles the past two decades. According to Liqui Moly company literature, “Liqui Moly additives work like vitamins and trace elements in various areas of your vehicle. It is a fountain of youth for your engine.”

Choosing the right additive package is even more important than selecting the base oil itself. – Steffen Niemietz

However, there is a difference in oil selection between a modern “tight-tolerance” engine as opposed to vintage engines with wider clearances. Modern engine oils have far more additives in lubrication than ever before. The selection of motor oil is as much about selecting the right additive package as it is the correct weight.

Oil Selection

Steffen Niemietz explains in the video that choosing the right additive package is even more important than selecting the base oil itself. The additive packages are part of the reason we have seen a shift toward lower weights in engine oils in recent years. Cars with power-adders like turbochargers require lubrication quicker and these lighter-weight engine oils help with that issue.

Fuel efficiency is far more important today with current gas prices. In the 1960s when fuel at the pump was thirty cents a gallon, fuel efficiency was not nearly as important. You could reach in the ashtray and come up with enough dough to pay for a couple of gallons of petrol.
