Race Engine Break-In With Driven Racing Oil: Break-In Oil

The 2019 season of racing is going to be starting a little late for Project DeadSpool truck as it’s encountered quite a bit of change over the last six months. Since the engine has been completely torn down and rebuilt from the ground up, there is some necessary maintenance that you do to a new engine to ensure longevity and reliability. Thanks to Driven Racing Oil, we’re going to be break-in our 0.020-inch over 5.9-liter Cummins race engine with their DBR Break-In Oil. (PN 05308)

Driven Racing Oil offers the latest in advanced racing lubricants for racing, hot rods, and serious street performance vehicles. Generated by Joe Gibbs Racing, Driven Racing Oils utilize cutting edge lubricant technology and on-track research for maximum performance and durability. With a background of all-out performance, we can trust that we’re using the best products in our engine.

Behind The Oil

The DBR 15W-40 Break-In Oil is the latest break-in product out of their lineup. It is designed specifically for high-performance and turbocharged diesel engines. When you’ve just built an engine, you want to make sure that the first oil going in it will lace the interior of the engine with good lubricity for revolutions to come.

We caught up with Driven’s Lake Speed Jr. to get his thoughts on this item and how critical it really is. “In a build like this, it is important to protect your high-performance diesel engine during the most critical moments in its life, the initial break-in,” said Speed. “With this special formulation we’ve developed, your engine will get the protection it needs.”

DBR 15W-40 Break-In Oil Features

  • Maximum Diesel Durability
  • Protect Turbocharger Bearings
  • ZDDP Fortified Camshaft Protection
  • Ensures Proper Surface Mating
This formula ensures proper surface mating during this critical break-in process. Thanks to a proprietary anti-wear formulation, it chemically aids with piston ring sealing without relying on a conventional friction modifier. This oil features a low detergent level that allows the ZDDP additive to adhere directly to every inexorable metal wear surfaces for maximum scuffing protection of the flat tappet camshafts, bushing lifters, and camshaft-driven fuel pumps, turbocharger bearings, and cylinder bores. When we assembled this engine, we went by the book and silicone, greased, assembly lubed everything we could to ensure a perfect, free-flowing engine. With that, once fired, all of those materials will break loose and end up in your oil. During our break in period, we want to make sure to get all of that out while still obtaining a good adhering process to our interior metals.

Petroleum break-in oils from Driven provide the proper levels of “fast burn” Zinc, Phosphorous, and essential anti-wear additives to correctly break in high-performance applications.

This oil is used by Joe Gibbs Racing to break in and dyno all of its race engines, Driven BR Break-in Oils is the perfect choice for the first 400 miles on the street, one night of racing or dyno power pulls.

The break-in process is simple. We will fire the engine for the first time and run it at 2,000-RPM for five minutes. Once these five minutes are up, we will then do our engine overhead changes which will include a hot retorque of the cylinder head studs. We have since set the studs at 150 ft-lbs, but once you fire the engine for the first time, you want to make sure the heat of the engine and cylinder pressure hasn’t backed a fastener off.

When we got the engine hot and ready for the drain, you could physically see the assembly particles coming out of the pan. That gives us a good indication that this break-in oil has adhered to the engine and flushed out any of the contaminants that were inside.

These high horsepower turbocharged diesel engines require increased defense against high temperatures and anti-wear protection. With Driven’s high-zinc Diesel Break-In Oil, we’re guaranteed the protection we want for our engine. To find out what Driven Racing Oil can do for you, be sure and check out their website.
